This is my final project for the semester. My partner, Melia and I designed an apartment complex out of a pre-existing UNCG owned warehouse. After designing the space we chose rooms to further the detailing of our individual designs.

My complex was based around the idea of a space that would suit a single or a couple residents from the XY generation. With this in mind I wanted a place that was comfortable, somewhat contemporary and sustainable space.

This space also contains a loft that leads to a second story Master Suite. The stairs in the apartment were a huge factor behind the design of this space. The stone focal wall of the space was a huge architectural element of my space, which then lead me to add the stairs as part of this element.

A Place to Bathe... for an Olympic Athlete

My Inspiration...
When first discovering the details of our next studio project I really thought about the life of a handicapped individual. When I think of the hardship that these people endure everyday I sympathize for them. Growing up next door to Amanda, an paralympic athlete I have now discovered that is the last emotion they want us to feel. Amanda is an individual that amazes me everyday and her willingness to not settle for anything and go for the gold, just like she did in 5,000m race in Beijing in the 2008 Olympics. When hearing the project she was the main thought in my mind, making this a space usable to her as an Olympic Athlete.

I played with several different designs and ideas with a bathing space as a functional, yet relaxing place.

From this view you can see the linear ramps and benches that I designed with inspiration from the lap lanes in not only track races, but swimming races as well.
Reflective Ceiling Plan

When designing the lighting I wanted something simple, but bright to add light into the space. I decided on a simple strip running through the center of the pool mimicking the linear "racing lane" concept of the bath. I also wanted to add highlights to the fountains on either side of the pool to add light to the centerpieces.

Section Cut

In this view you see the wall fountain that lands straight into the pool on the optional seating. It also shows the ramp leading into the pool as well as the doorway exiting the space.

Elevation
This shows a similar view to above, but shows more detailing of the "step" fountains. When designing these I was inspired by the racing blocks in swimming races. I really enjoyed the idea of incorporating heighth within and outside of the pool, especially to someones that does not get to experience this very often.

First Perspective

In this perspective you can see the focal point of the room is definitely the two identical fountains located on the edge of the pool. These are magnifed with lighting and the extreme use of scale.

A Place to Bathe...

The idea behind my bathing experience is allowing the client to be submerged about chest high in strongly jetted, therapeutic jets with very accessible controls to the heating and cooling of the water they are submerged in. I want the concept to do something with the purest, simplest form of bathing.

Bathing- the act of submerging one into water and cleansing one's own body.

I want this to be not only a bathing experience, but a renewal of hope, something that will wash away the doubt in oneself and allow them to experience new beginnings because of the courage they will feel afterwards. I want it comfortable to the client's special needs, but I do not want them to feel like they are "different." I want them to be comfortable in their own skin.

Art and the nature of its extremities are endless. With art comes the recognized category of architecture. Architecture can be found almost anywhere in man made and even naturally produced elements. While others may beg to differ, examples of architecture are everywhere. The study of this divine art has become more frequently observed and developed over the past century. While looking at the past fifty years and the strive for further development in design tools, the field has grown drastically.
When first looking further into architecture, calculators and handheld tools were a huge asset. Even though these elements are still very important in today’s study they are not as popularly used as electronic tools. With the development of calculators of course came the invention of further specified computers and programs that help architects develop a better interpretation of their design.
Computing and Architecture can be said with a hand in hand theory as well as can stand by themselves. Computers have been an amazing development in architect’s eyes because this tool can help further produce the visual aid of their envisioned product. The expansion of computer technology can not only help with visual aids, but it can also catch mistakes that are very frequently made when producing a design. They are incredible tools because they know the numerous of standard codes to designing as well as become a tool for visual aid and sometimes even speed the production rate.
Unfortunately even though computers are wonderful tools they are also a hindrance to architect’s creative skills. Computers help the architect in time management and the clean appearance of his or her work, but it is very impersonal and looked down upon artistically. Yes, the final product of the structure maybe the same, but the design shown on a computer will give a different impression to a client than the one hand drawn. The hand drawn sketch may allow the client to connect on a more personal level, seeing that the architect personally knows the skills needed to produce the structure designed. It also shows that the architect has acquired artistic skills as well. Even though the hand drawn method has numerous of benefits it also contains some downfalls including cleanliness and precision. When hand drawing it is important to keep everything light until you are sure where the lines are to be drawn, and when darkening the lines, trying not to smudge the lead onto the piece. It is also difficult to be precise in not only drawing the product, but making sure the structure is exactly what is wanted and it is to code.
Both methods are wonderful, and should be known to every architect. This is a big fear that many up and coming architects may know how to produce amazing graphics on the computer, but they do not have the skills mechanically. Being an artist is a very important part of becoming an architect and should never be taken for granted.

Dissolving Capsule Tiffany Garber

The idea behind this project was a capsule. Capsule delivering multiple different meanings and definitions depending on the situation or context in which it is phrased. This concept took the meaning of a medicine capsule and all of the features it includes. Pharmaceutical capsules are seen in households all around the world. The intention of their form is to be subscribed by a doctor and swallowed. After entering the human body the pill eventually starts dissolving and then medicates the body in the purpose it was taken. While designing this bus, many of the same characteristics came to mind. When moving, the capsule is smaller and compact, offering specific living needs for the volunteers who are helping the community. When the bus is stationary it expands double the size of the preexisting structure by sliding the top coating off of the capsule and then reforming it to dissolve the medicine and help the community. The act of dissolving and medicating is shown through the structural metamorphosis the bus takes on and the additional areas implemented to aid the community through teaching and medical attention. The bus houses not only four volunteer workers who will be residing in the space, but a number of community members that the volunteers will be helping.
The materials used in the shelter bus were picked according to a number of different credentials. The idea behind the bus was to have an environment that was comforting in a time of disparity; it was to be sustainable but also pertain to the concept of a capsule. The outside of the shelter is made out of aluminum. This material was chosen because it is not only extremely lightweight, spark resistant, but it is also very sustainable and easy to reuse. This material is used on the outside of the shelter, and the interior as well. This idea was produced because it is more sustainable, cost effective, and adds a feeling of reassurance to victims with the cool colors and the relaxing aura throughout the bus. This material is shown through silver coated matte board. Another frequently used material in the model is the plastic covering the windows. This represents glass capsule shaped windows that add an enticing effect through exploration between the inside and the outside world. These windows were shaped so that victims as well as the volunteers can learn to cope with tragic events that had just occurred through the fish bowl effect. They can see the outside and even be a step closer with the expansion of the windows, but they have the choice whether to experience it from visual views only or hands on views. The last material in the model is simply drywall on the inside; this is symbolized with an off white colored paper. This material was chosen to add comfort to the passengers. Drywall is a material that is used quite frequently in homes and a substance that is known as settling in a new environment.
This shelter bus was modeled after practical daily life needs, special needs, and sustainability. It is also a bus emulating prescribed medicine in a capsule, trying to help each community member at a time through dissolving it’s medicine around the victimized area.

This is the ideal bus stop that the seven group came up with. We wanted to incorporate the main tree into the design. To the left of the tree is a seating area and to the right is a standing area. The tree provides a majority of the shade. The main form penetrates out of the ground and continuously works around to create the seating area.

Candelabrum

The Pair of Candelabrum dates back to the early 19th century. The origin is unknown; it was developed in either France or England. Made from brass, bronze, glass, metal and felt, the candelabrum contains a circular, bronze stand, cylindrical body with a heraldic symbol. Topped with two bulblike forms, brass extending arms and floral candle cups containing glass prisms, this structure stands 14 inches high, 10 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. It was first developed by the Nichols family, and later Rose Standish Nichols contributed it to the Nichols House Museum in the year 1960.
Looking at this piece I was amazed by the amount of detailing and precision it contained. The amount of time I took drawing this light fixture took quite a bit out of my day, I could not even imagine actually carving and placing this candelabrum together. The decorative manner that this object reveals shows any viewer the emphasis of detailing during the time it was produced. Everything from the glass prisms, the carvings on the bulbs and the figurine on the tapering cylindrical bronze body, states that this statue is very ornate.
Comparing this piece to some others during this period, such as the Four Light Candelabrum by Mortimer and Hunt, I see some similarities dealing with the amount of work and detailing put into the piece. They are both built with extreme craft and dedication. Bold, expensive and extremely well crafted pieces were very popular in Europe at this time.

On the contrary, the "new aged"candelabrum demonstrates completely different qualities as the older pieces. The single stand is made from glass and crafted in a completely different manner then the European influenced ones. It speaks in a more contemporary, new aged style.
This European, candelabrum masterpiece could sit by itself and speak on it’s own, but when added with a highly decorated piece of furniture I think this would look too overwhelming. The piece would look the best by standing on a simple end table. Overall I truly enjoyed the artwork that this fixture contained and it makes me earn to see more from the same artist.

Communicate: Guerilla Marketing

Guerilla Marketing is the process of taking something that people will explore daily and developing it into an advertising product.

Community Outreach:

In reaching out to the community our group wanted to have a centralized sculpture that was a landmark for everything else. This sculpture is to incorporate something that the community would continue to pass on lee street and turn around a question the meaning behind the structure. In there search they will find that it leads back to the interior architecture studio. The sculpture is very important in this proposal, but we didn't want to limit ourselves, so we connected all of our other proposals back to this idea.

People:This is a diagram showing how word of mouth will be used throughout town and eventually, hopefully around United States and even the world.

Place:

In the photo above we marked a location where alot of our guerrilla marketing would take place. The depot is the heart of the Greensboro transit system, so in order to connect with the rest of Greensboro, why not penetrate at the very epicenter? here we would conduct fundraisers to "sell" our products, which include food, pens, stickers, flyer's-all completely free.

Our team thought that by focusing on a single icon and logo, and replicating that in all the marketing, would be the best way to catch people’s attention. The object we chose to use was a sculpture, and what better thing to use than a “wu-wu” to catch every ones eye.
The part of marketing that I focused on was our products. We thought by having a variety of products we would be able to cater to more people rather than focusing on a single product that may only cater to a few peoples needs. So, I made apparel such as t-shirts, bumper stickers, candy and chocolate bars, pens and coffee mugs. By doing this we hope to have everyone, everywhere saying, “what’s a wu-wu”?

Print Materials

These two sketches are our ideas for posters, or handouts that could be handed out, or placed in local coffee shops, or even left with the tip when you are out to dinner. The main idea behind these logos is to attach them to the back of many local companies, shops and public buildings restroom stalls. Our group members all decided that when you are on the toilet there is not much else occupying your time and that you were more likely to pay attention to an add in this manner.

This is an example of the sculpture we were planning on building. It would set somewhere that many people would often walk past and question what it is. Eventually they would find out either by looking at the sculpture and analyzing it or many of the other forms of marketing that we have planned.

When we first looked at the requirements we were overwhelmed by all of the information. We then figured out the meaning of each word listed and felt more comfortable with the topic. It was difficult to differentiate between the three terms. The most difficult terms to understand were ergonomics and proxemics because of the gray areas they represent. At the start of the project we knew the needs and activities that we wanted to address, however building the models was difficult due to lack of our knowledge of standards.
Our suggestions to designers would be to stay open-minded while planning their space. It would also be useful to be well versed in codes and regulations. While entering into the Bus Shelter project, we had not had prior experience with codes therefore it was a challenge to plan spaces. Looking back, we now know that there are changes that need to be made.
Codes help in design because it builds a foundation by setting the framework. When a designer is drawing a blank, the codes will help them start them get back on track. Not only does it give the designer a foundation, but also it benefits the client. Codes guarantee functionality and your specific needs will be met.Codes can benefit all of our designing for a place to start our work. On the other hand, it can restrict our creativity as designers. Codes create limits and constrict us to a mundane fashion. They are both beneficial and restrictive to a designer.

Animal Rescue: Shelter Bus

This is an idea we had for the animal rescue bus that would contain a large quantity of kennels to keep the rescued animals safe.

This image is of a secluded room that would function as a small Veterinary to tend to injured or sick animals.

We figured also that the animals would probably be really hungry and thirsty so the shelter bus would also need to contain lots of storage for the abundance of food that would be needed.

This is an idea I had for the back of the bus, it could house supplies and medicine. It also has two big windows that would allow for lots of light as well as a pen for the puppies to play in.

This was another idea for the Bark Bus. It shows an area to either groom the dogs, or examine them if they are in need of medical attention. This was an idea for a layout of the Bark Bus that I had. A lot of areas were not completely committed to at this time.

This image represents the necessity of storage for a large amount of food and supplies such as plates, cups, utensils, pots, and pans.

I figured in order to keep this system of releasing food to the people organized a desk might be needed where orders could be placed and records of how much food each family gets.

Since we had the idea of a double decker bus we thought that having a quiet, relaxing place to eat with family members would be just as beneficial as receiving food.

Bus Shelter Interview Number 2

Dalegolo is definitely an interesting guy from East Los Angeles. He was wearing a hat pulled side ways, labeled LA and a shirt that was striped with neon colors. His shoes amazingly was coordinated with his shirt, which was a bright blue and other colors. He works for Regional Financing as a field agent. They give people cash loans and other types of loans. I told him that a field agent was a good job for him because he can easily relate with people and he agreed with me. Dalegolo is about in his 20s and has been living in NC for 2 years. He says his dad is in the hospital and that is what brings him here. When I asked him what he thought about NC he replied, “It’s different. The world is different, slower. In LA you have to be n point there is not time to gaze.” Dalegolo is a regular on the GTA, he says that he takes it everyday. He got excited when I asked him if it would be nice to have a bus shelter out here. He said, “yeah that way you don’t have to sit out here and worry about getting hemorrhoids.”Community

Question: How often do you use public transportation?

Answer: I’m from Washington D.C. and I used the public transportation there a lot, but I have only used it once or twice here in Greensboro.

Question: Where do you usually go when you ride the bus?
Answer: The 4 seasons mall on High Point Road.

Question: What are the differences between our bus system and the one in D.C?
Answer: The bus talks to you, and tells you what bus stop they are on.

Question: What would make your bus riding experience more enjoyable?
Answer: If the bus would come more often, there are also no boards near the bus stop listing the different routes you can take and where they go. Another problem is that the bus signs are hard to find and not known to a lot of people.

Question: How can we change the bus stations to make it more pleasing for riders?
Answer: Make more stops have benches, have times posted that the bus will come and have a shelter for poor weather.

I wanted to thank you for coming to visit teh IARC department last week. I really enjoyed your talk and learning about the difference our campus is undergoing and going to become due to our different acts of sustainability. I was very excited to hear about more transportation methods. Being a second year student and not having a car both years on campus I get a little agitated with the excessive amounts of freshmen with cars on campus. I think that new transportation methods would help ease the limited parking spaces available and help save the environment a little at a time.

Context The Three R's: Reading, Riding and Recording

The two sketches I drew while riding the bus, thus why they are not very straight lines.

The map that a very nice GTA worker gave us to find our way home and also save our lives.

During this process I started off by first Riding, then Recording as well as Reading. I found each part very intriguing and unique. I started my journey at around 2:40 by first riding the Heat bus with Melia to the bus depot in downtown Greensboro. A somewhat short trip involving some fellow UNCG students and some cafeteria and custodial workers. Entering into the city we stopped at about 2 stations, picking up people we did not recognize, nor felt like we had much in common with. The plan was to take the Heat bus to the depot, then get on the bus to Friendly Center, possibly shop a little, get smoothies on the hot 90 degree + day and head home on the well known HEAT bus. It would be an easy journey and fill the requirement in for the class. What we did not expect is to be in the Greensboro Transit Authority's presence for 3+ hours. When we reached the bus station we found out that loading dock 7 was the one that would take us to Friendly. We waited for about 20-30 minutes observing around us. Now we knew we were entering the city and taking public transportation, but we did not expect to feel so disconnected from everyone. Being raised in the most rural of suburbs outside Philadelphia I have not experienced much diversity in my lifetime. Sure I have seen people of different religions and races, but not on an everyday basis. Going to UNCG alone was a huge step for me with developing the ways that other people live. But while waiting for that number 7 Friendly Bus I have never felt more out of my element in my entire life. I know Melia was feeling the same way by her facial expressions, but surprisingly the cat caught her tongue for once and she had a loss for words. After waiting awhile for the Bus we opted to take the Summit Ave. bus that seemed to return the quickest. We did not think ahead that there may be two buses riding the same route, so we hopped on looking to just fulfill a class requirement and what we got was an adventure. We figured out later that many people on our route were going to the Local Walmart to purchase some items. Looking around the bus the people seemed all of the same race and mostly the same social rankings. I do not know if this has to do with the lack of their own personal transportation system or the city of Greensboro, but I have to say after riding this bus I felt almost prissy the way I sat on the bus. I felt many people were judging me and almost looking down on me because they thought that I thought I was better than them. After being teased that we were almost back to the depot several times during an hour and a half time frame we finally were back at the depot again waiting for the HEAT bus to pick us up and return us to the lovely clock tower on campus. While waiting in the bus depot Melia and I discussed some of our experiences. She admitted being too scared to talk about some of hers because none of them were positive. We both concluded that to ride the bus you have to not be in any hurry to get to your intended destination. You also have to realize you may have to switch your path to get to your final destination. This experience also helped me learn not to complain about anything I have because I know about 5 miles down the road people have it way worse off then I do.

I am excited to announce that I did survive my first week in my 2nd year IARC studio. After going through this first week I have had a little dosage as to what to expect for the rest of the year. I have heard before that 2nd year is the hardest and it is there to "weed out" the people that are not serious about this career. After 19 years I know myself very well. Since a very young age I have contemplated different versions of design and I know this is what I want to do for the rest of my life and I know second year as well as third, fourth and fifth years are going to be difficult, but worth the outcome. These next few years will help me develop my skills even further and I am really excited to start this year off on a positive note and think of homework more as something to help further my skills.

This was my first stop of my trip. It contains drawings of my Room and the Outside my dorm, Guilford.
This is also the sign on the outside of my dorm, and the street, more of a driveway down Gray Drive on campus.This was the heat bus that I took to my next destination, my boyfriends house to use his car for the journey. These are also road signs that showed the direction I opted to take. At a red light we saw this car that stood out quite a bit with the license plate stating "LIL WHIP."

This was my last set of drawings; Adam's Hair Studio always stands out in my mind while traveling anywhere passing it because of it's circular shape. The next drawing shows when I finally felt relieved because we found our destination. The last drawing was of the blue ticket houses with the yellow doors that stood out in my mind because I was asking myself why I drove all the way to a dead water park on a rainy day?

I took this image from Colleen's blog, http://queenoftoast.blogspot.com. I really enjoyed looking through a lot of her artistry, with not only paper, but sewing and developing other images through photographs and significant memories. I took this picture, because even though the people's faces are not shown, the viewer knows they are present. This seems like a good solution for us who are afraid to draw people in spaces.

I took this image from France Belleville's site, http://www.wagonized.typepad.com. I think her work is gorgeous, everything she draws is with great detail and every view is taken with great consideration. I think even from a distance, her people will probably still be difficult to duplicate.

This image was taken from Tommy Kane's blog, http://www.paulabecker.com/blog. I love his work. It is reminds me a lot of characatures. His style is very colorful and vibrant. This image works well because the people in his drawing are shown, but not in full detail.

I picked this piece because it contained a different shading method than I am used to and it also includes an actual structured piece in the sketch. This is my replica drawing of one of the Color Drawing book sketches. I tried to make it look very mechanical and exact I would have changed a couple of the angles in the drawing, but overall I was happy with this piece.

Through the details I definitely added a personal touch, which took away from the replication process. I also should not have added the black fill in as well.

Wood Project

This project was definitely difficult for me. It was my first time in the wood shop and I had no idea where to start. Jake really helped me use all of the tools and build the piece I originally decide. I realized through working on this project that simplicity is not always the easiest route. I had to go through many different techniques to angle the intersecting pieces perfectly together. I think this was a great first experience in the shop and was overall happy with my project.

France
I believe a lot of the french decorating styles are similar to any european style. I know each country has a different or special element, but I believe a lot of them incorporate nicely together. Whenever I see french designs I think straight edge and clean. Sometimes I also see a lot of formal elements in their style. Lots of floral prints and heavy drapery. I love French decorating. I feel they take a more artistic approach to the word decorating. Maybe this has something to do with the fashion capital of the world?

The overall style of English homes I feel is very cozy. Whenever I look at english decorating I think of a cottage or house nestled in a back field with wildflowers. I feel many of the influences are country oriented. Many of the homes have beautiful, vibrant gardens. This is also another quality of english work; the plant life. Looking at anything in the english colonies you will notice a lot of green and ponds, lakes etc. Another production of the english is also the flower prints. They are everywhere from inside their homes and on their town corners.

Sustaniable Design

I love this structure. I think everything about this idea is beautiful. Not only doe it add character to an environment, but it helps out the atmosphere as well. Everything from the carbon dioxide levels to color make this project a sustainable element.

This product is made out of entirely recycled materials. The materials include plastic rubber and other random pieces. This feature is one I thought very interesting. It allows for flooring made out of the bark of cork oak trees. With this production no trees are ever cut down with the intention of making this flooring, but they are the left overs from other productions. They are also considered sound proof making your apartment living much better for the homes below you.

Based in Pennsylvania, Roof gardens are becoming more and more popular. They not only create a beautiful roof display, but they also very affordable. The InterfaceFlor Commercial I read about was very intriguing. It told the viewer in the advertisement about the brand and the qualities of it. This company uses both nylon and PLA a renewable corn based fiber that helps conserve the products of the earth. I think it is a very sustainable idea and will hopefully be used for years to come.

The DuPont company located in the outskirts of my hometown, in Wilmington, Delaware has also added a sustainable resource. They have decided to produce solid surface materials that cater to food elements. This new type of material is also fire rated, making it safer to in homes. This is a great addition to sustainable design in homes.

Light Shelf products have also been made to keep energy saved. This product was made with the intention of cutting down not only energy, the the cost of it too. The shelf was designed to allow light to continue and come into the room while something is placed on it. It also allows viewers from the outside to look in a wonder what the object is that is on the shelf. This is very friendly for an office space, but also a home or other type of facility.

Fluorescent light fixtures are another element that has been improved and now they are suitable for offices and interiors. This new product has the lighting balanced and fixed. I think this is a good step for the environment because it makes us more cautious of the energy that we use everyday on minute projects. Lisa Davenport is a designer that is located in Glastonbury, CT. Her designs have won her several awards, which seem to add class and prestige to many homes in her area. By looking at her work she appears to be a very big fan of wallpaper. Personally I admire that she still uses it considering everyone is so against wallpaper in the most resent years. I am still a huge fan of it as my room was just newly wallpapered to emphasize a pattern that would take weeks to duplicate using paint. I think some of her work is busy looking, but for the most part fascinating to the eye.

Located in Monroe, Connecticut, Barbara O'Brien has been designing everywhere from Charleston, S.C. to New York and eventually opening her own firm in 1991 with co worker, Amy Shannon. O'Brien's firm includes designs that appear to be from New England. They include simple patterns and colors that compliment the area and sophistication of the home. Some of her projects have little spunky accents throughout the room, which is quite surprising the the viewer.

Vicki Richardson is known for receiving several awards in the state of Georgia for her designs. Looking at her work was somewhat disappointing. The more I saw, the more I was upset with. Her designs started off being very intricate and beautiful. The more I looked I saw the designs becoming out of date and boring. It seems as if she would have great ideas, but needs to bring all of them into the 21st century, or atleast update her website's portfolio.

Annie Speck's firm is located in Laguna Beach, California. She specializes in both commercial and residential projects. Her style is fairly simple and somewhat plain. I feel that this design is quite busy. the words are very legible and bold, but there are too many of them and they look quite cluttered. The colors are extremely loud and draw the reader in, but all of the writing gets the viewer lost and confused. The set up is very appropriate; with the number and location at the bottom. But, the rest of the add could be downsized a small amount.

This advertisement is very straight forward. It consists of a couple of simple words that describe this product. It allows the viewer to be intrigued by the colors and very readable font. The picture shows a great image of the product along with the company's name is very easy to find and all of the necessary information is listed on the site.

This advertisement I feel has a very good impact. Looking at it, it seems to jump out to the viewer. The patterns and colors makes the page appear to stick out which draws the reader in. This advertisement I feel is poorly designed. It is too wordy and there are too many sections where words are placed. These words seem to be placed more for ornamental purposes then for advertisement. I think the color is bland and does not seem intriguing to the viewer. This advertisement was clever, but a little difficult to understand. I took from this site that the ad was supposed to represent the leather on the furniture is as real as the skin from the place they are from. It probably would have been easier to interpret if there was a small saying or blurb about the leather or animals of the safari. I think the point is humorous, but the message could be clearer. the logo is well placed, it is shown, but not overly emphasized.

I really enjoy looking at this graphic everytime I see it. It shows not only great contrast in color, but it promotes the perfume through a seductive manner. The apples look detailed enough to grab and eat. The model looks very natural showing that natural beauty is what makes a girl beautiful and worth special things. This design is for Coca-Cola products. It shows that no other product can compare with the one shown here. Other products are not worth the price that you pay and they do not hold up to the same name as Coca-Cola. This advertisement was very confusing. I got that it was talking about a feminine product through the color pink. I did not get the quote that was made. Or the picture demonstrated. I like the colors and how they incorporated with each other, but the saying needs to be altered. I believe it may be speaking about faking drunken actions? And how it is better to do that then have a fake product.

I felt as if I had to look a couple times and then read about this ad before I could determine what it was for. This piece looks like a mirror instead of a picture frame. I feel it has a very intense purpose. It reminds me of the mirror from Snow White, where the witch sees her reflection and speaks to it. The portrait at the top reminds me of a lapel pin or a necklace.

This piece was an ornamentation taken from a piece of furniture. It shows lace and a formal collar on the model, which leads me to believe that the person who this was made for had money to spend. The piece is very victorian. I have to say my favorite part is the circular shape. It appears to look like a coin which I also love because I feel it looks like a piece of currency which is a big part of American and every other country's culture.

This piece was made to give regard to the angel Gabriel. I really enjoyed this piece. It reminded me of a Christmas ornament that we have at home. I feel that the feeling I get about this piece isn't way off of the actual meaning. The piece was carved in 1860, appearing to be in stone, which makes me believe it would be a lot older than it is.

This piece of artifact scares me. It makes me feel violated and frightened. It reminds me of a servant of the devil. It was uncovered from Bethlehem, Pa which I think is interesting. I would assume it was somewhere in Europe considering the time period and style it includes. Apparently it was used to ward off evil spirits, but I think it would enhance their presence.

This piece is titled the Lady with the Urn. It is a neoclassical version of a greek goddess pouring water. It once decorated a stately Scottish home. The piece reminds me of a bible scene with a woman going to a well to answer the lord's request. It makes me feel appreciative that such great sculpting exsists today and has for many years.

This piece shows a typical 19th century American farm scene. It demonstrates the life of a farmer. I could see this piece displayed in a farmhouse or another type of rural environment. The colors are a little bland, but I think they are displayed in a manner that would not look right any other way.

This piece has a lot of symbolism with it. It shows the angels delivering the cross to Jesus. The star at the top is supposed to be the holy spirit. The piece is another Victorian inspired piece. It shows much relevance to everyday and historical religion. I think it is very detailed and intriguing allowing viewers from all over to appreaciate not only the artwork, but story behind it.

This piece is very moving. It makes me feel powerful and inspired. I think that it demonstrates the style of the Reniassance era. It says that the lion has been known to be placed in entrance ways as guardians od the room. They are also said to be associated with loaylty and strength.

This cupid is considered an artifact. It was inspired by a Victorian furniture detail. It promotes the details of an early 20th century design. I think it is very formal and promotes a sense of peace and comfort that a guardian angel is looking out for everyone. The only complaint I have about this piece is where would you put it?

This chair was developed in India. I have to say it does not seem like much of a surprise. It has mostly a Mid eastern style to the seating. It is very detailed and the cuttings in the chair show that great time and effort went into this piece. I feel it would look beautiful in a formal dining room or even a foyer of a home.

Interior Environments

This piece was appropriately titled formal bathroom. I was in love with the rich reds in this space. I am a huge fan of stripes and this room really added a great level of contrast and prestige. The chandelier and other lighting fixtures also help add to the formal feel. The armoire is a rather large part of this picture, which makes me feel like it over powers the room, but I can not see the whole space to throughly judge that. I love the contrast between the red and white and gray slate flooring.

This foyer is very "themed." It shows complete spanish influence in every aspect. I have to say I enjoy looking at the different types of styles and this piece is no different. The moldings alone in this room show the detailed architecture of the spanish culture. I feel like this piece would not fit in with any type of house. It caters to spanish inspired homes and spaces. I also feel that it would not fit in a small sized home. The banister is one thing I would change about this space. I think the wood is too heavy and an iron staircase would look more presentable.

This space is very customized. I think the windows are very appealing and add not only light, but color and detail into the room. The beams, trim and furniture are all made of dark wood making this space very warm and inviting. I want to run on the curved comfy sofa and cuddle up with some hot chocolate on a cold winter night.The room appears to be very clean and organized.

I really enjoyed critiquing this room. It looks very crisp and clean. It is very kid oriented and demonstrates a very organized space. The color work very well together, the sage, navy and brick all work well and the red makes the space pop. The idea is cute and simple. I really liked the font on the ceiling as well.

This space is very kid friendly. Personally it is not my style and I would change a lot of things about it. The painting is cute and colorful, but I feel the beds do not match this same kid friendly theme. I think the benches are a neat idea, they add the locker room aspect to the room. I think the baseball bat wood should have been incorporated in the room in someway. It would have added a more natural feeling.

This kitchen is very color complimentary. It includes very European inspired barstools which help to add to the Italian style kitchen. I feel this space is very well used considering how small it is. The working triangle is very accessible which is another bonus. This space has both attractive lighting and a ceiling fan. I think this space is used to the fullest of its potential. The only thing I would add is possibly a rug infront of the sink and the bar, there may be one there already, but you can not see in this picture.

This space is a lot different style then many of the other pictures I have critiqued. The colors compliment each other very well. The black wood in the room helps pronounce the colors in a more dramatic way. I enjoy the earth tones, but I know most people do not feel the same way. I think the carpet needs to be altered, but that is just one small addition I would alter to make the room more visually pleasing.

This picture is very pleasing the eye. It reminds me of the Breaker's mansion located in Newport, Rhode Island. The windows are opened to a beautiful patio outside almost every room. The ceiling is very detailed and colorful. It brings life to the room through the tiles and patterns located on them. The fireplace is also very beautiful, it looks as if it is made of a stone or marble material. I also really enjoy the painting above the mantle. It is complimented with two candle sticks that work very well in this space. Not only do I appreciate the painting, but the way it is just casually placed rather than hung on the mantle.

This picture shows a very high end living space. The ceiling alone appears to be either some type of marbleized painting technique or actual marble. The curtains are very simple which is actual quite stunning in this very intricate space. I am surprised at myself for enjoying the paintings in this space, they are somewhat modern and normally I would not agree they look appropriate, but I feel they work very well in this space. I also love the sofa, the entire structure of the piece of furniture is very simple, but yet appropriate.

This space is quite beautiful in my eyes. It demonstrates not only elegance, but it is sophisticated at the same time. The beams above are a dark wood contrasting with the pale walls and the sponged paint technique looks very artistic and European. The furniture is very formal implying that type of space. The chandelier alone is appears to be very high class and intricate.

Two New Technologies

Camera Phones are something that have just recently been a big success. They were first developed in the 1990's, but later perfected in the 21st century. This new technology has really helped the design field. It has helped it in terms of designers via visuals. Using camera phones makes description a lot easier to pronounce. The use of sending a visual for another person to see not only speeds up the process of production, but usually the cost is included in the cell phone bill. This helps not only designers, but everyone to see pictures and visuals faster and for a cheaper price.
AutoCAD is something that the upper years use almost everyday. It is a program that helps both designers and architects develop visual models. The program was fist starting to become developed in the 1980's, but the first actual product was produced in 1999 titled AutoCAD 2000. There are now 8 different programs and they are updated almost every year to enhance the product, to further the learning and organization.

This was my first parti that the whole class had to do over. I had some ok ideas, that I expanded on in my later parti.

This was the attempt at my second parti. I kept a lot of the same ideas, but I just expanded on them with others. I tried to consider all of Jake's example partis. The color helps me visualize it in a different view.

This is my second sketch of the cube model. It looks similar to my first sketch, but I added darker lead to the piece.

This is my tree model redone. I used vertical streaks and some cross hatching as well. I think it looks a lot better than my first drawing.

Shading Exercises

This is one of my first sketches. I used the vertical stroking method and experimented a little with different darknesses etc.

This is one of my other cube exercises. It is gradually getting better, I wish I would have used darker shadings throughout the sketch.

This is one of my favorite shading exercises so far. I think I prefer the darker contrasting vertical strokes.

This is one of my first sketches using the scribble theory. I really liked the result s and had fun shading it in. I wish it was slightly darker.

This is the most recent sketch of cubes I did. It was the vertical method. I believe this is my best and favorite attempt in one. I am happy to see progress with my work.

This is the shading sketch of one of my models for studio class. It is my first attempt at the IARC version of "The Tree of Life." I also used cross hatching in this exercise.

This is my last sketch. It was the vertical method again which I seem to favor. I wish I would have done the background differently, but I still really enjoyed the box shadings and the overall piece.

Designs By Mark is based off of a location in Pennsylvania. This unfortunately is one of the negatives about the site, it does not list the address. The site greets the viewer with trendy music and a slide show of pictures and logos. It is a little too much at first glance. The site is fairly easy to access. The before and afters are impressive, but seem to be from the same home. There is not much diversity. The award pages are impressive, but it would be more helpful if the designers showed the article in the magazines that featured their work. The portfolio was very diverse in work which was a good touch, but the philosophy needed a little more depth, history of the company perhaps?

This site was very unimpressive. I think less of the designer based on the design of his internet site. It seemed very plain, with no color. When I clicked on the different links the pictures seemed old and not up to date. The designer specializes in yachts, soft sculptures and interiors. This site appears that it has not been touched since 1988. He looks like he has potential, but has displayed it very poorly.

Audrey Long's website impressed me. It not only was simple and easy to view, but the pictures were clear and could be enlarged. Her site also explains her history and awards along with pictures to show a portfolio of her work. Her site also adds an address, along with the email and phone number, which most of the other sites did not feature. The only details I would change would be the first page, it seems a little bland and has nothing to do with design. I also would change the location of the next sticker for accessing pictures.

This site is by far my favorite. I enjoyed looking at the different types of designs. The company appears to do residential spaces, but specialize in hospitals, country clubs, restaurants etc. The portfolios were very impressive and the designs were completely different showing ability to adapt to certain preferences and demands. The site had contact information and showed the designers. It was very organized and easy to move about.

This site was a bit confusing, but had a beautiful layout, which I feel made up for the confusion. The designers were pictured, but not spoken about which I felt was a flaw. I also wish there had been more diversity in the pictures. Even though all of the shots were magnificent, they featured the same style in every photo. I also was confused by the furnishing sites. Is this what furniture they use, or prefer....??? How come there aren't many pictures of examples?

This site was different then all the other ones I experienced. I enjoyed the slideshow of pictures, but it was a little confusing to me. I did not think a lot of the pictures were photo worthy, maybe they were before and after shots? Atleast I hope so... The other part that I appreciated as a customer, but I do not know if it appears to be the most professional is the listing of prices on the website.

I throughly enjoyed this site. I loved all of her pictures and the style of her design. I thought the site was fairly easy to manage. The only flaw was the speed of internet page turning so to speak, but that may be an effect off of the connection I was getting. I enjoyed her biography and clients testimonies they added a good recommendation.

This site was extremely fascinating to me. I thought the pictures were all beautiful and well thought out. I enjoyed the biography and really enjoyed the blogfolio link that they attached. It showed their process and theories throughout different pieces. The website was a little confusing to look around and I did not like the idea of having the home link at the bottom of the page.

This website was very confusing. The links seemed to go to another page and only list qualities the architects specialize in. I was not impressed with the pictures or layout. It seemed very dull and not detailed enough. I like the black against the color contrast, but the site needed more pictures to actually build it to make a statement.

This was my first sketch of the day it was drawn in pencil and I used the vertical method to shade the scene. I thought this was my best piece at this area.

This was an example of my still life in crosshatching. I thought this procedure was more difficult to actually produce a shaded effect. This sketch was done in pen.

Drawing Book Sketches

These are my three pencil shape sketches.The triangle was drawn with horizontal lines, the cube with cross hatching and the sphere with random. I was a little confused with the pyramid or cone structure, but I really enjoyed the sphere. I think it looks the best as well.

These were my pen sketches. The pyramid was again horizontal, the cube cross hatching and the sphere was stifling.I really enjoyed the sphere again, but it was very time consuming and really tore up my pen in the act.

This was the staircase structure. It was drawn with the horizontal technique in pencil. I was a little confused where to shade, and wasn't overly happy with the final result, but I thought it was good practice.

This is my sketch of a suitcase, I decided to use the random shading effect for this piece, I am not very happy with it's turn out, but I can hope for the better next time.

This is my sketch of the camera tri-pod. I used the cross hatch effect to add shading to this piece. I was happy with it's turn out but not with the proportions, they were a bit off.

These are 12 thumbnail sketches I created. I tried to morph both Stephanie and Troy's projects together to create something completely new. In this process I feel a lot of my drawings are fairly similar, but serve good purposes.

This is an outline of my metamorphosis.

These are all three of my projects I produced.

This is the project that has more of Stephanie's idea. It was based off of her Memory Box that held the celebration of Bastille Day in a pop-up box. I added the stripe to represent Troy's pencil box's simplicity. I also made shelves inside to make a tighter space to hold objects, similiar to Troy's pencil box design.

This is the "middle" project. I started off with several ideas and molded it into one combined outcome. The project is a different color because this is before I knew we could only use one project from each person. I chose the teal color to represent Stephanie's egg in her leaf covered egg project, I also used Troy's memory box's first iteration with the grid design at the bottom. I also took Stephanie's memory box with the tabs that open up, similar to the fireworks popping out when you open the box. I took Troy's pencil box into consideration with the tight fit of pencils and the vertical shaped project.

This was my more Troy based project. I decided to base it off of his pencil case. It was almost the exact thing, I took the simplicity of his coloring and opening construction. I tried to incorporate Stephanie's project with the knob on the front and again the compartments inside.

Self Portrait Project

The Objective of this project was to make 8 self portraits of yourself. Along with the portraits you should make some type of stand, display to house your portraits in. The housing can not take up more than 18 by 18 inches. The idea that came to me was to emphasize different features that I like about myself in drawings. I drew one picture of a runner, showing my love to run and be active. It also demonstrates my will power and commitment to my team and juggling college life. Another drawing that I have that was placed on top of my display was my version of my best friend, Lyndsey and I hugging on graduation day. This is one of my favorite pictures of all time. That day was very memorable and it shows how I appreciate everyone that I love in my life and that is one of my top priorities as well. Another drawing I added was an outline of my hair. I thought this was a good drawing to add because many people tell me that my hair is different, it is lighter in the front and darker behind. I also think I am one of the few blondes in class and this would be a good way to know who created this sculpture. My smile is another characteristic that most people compliment me on, I love smiling and I think it makes people feel at ease. I also decided to weave the wire in the teeth to show I have had braces before, this shows everyone is not perfect and there are things that we do not know about each other. I did a more abstract piece in all blue because that is the mood I was feeling when I drew this piece and it comforted me to promote a different style of drawing. I made a sketch of me in my favorite pink hat. I liked this one because the only color I added was in the hat and eyes. I think this makes the piece a little fun and different. Along with the pink hate piece I did another piece outlining only few colors of my features. April told me it reminded her of one of those Barbie cross sketch boards, I thought that was an interesting take. Since it was my first drawing, I wanted to do something fun and simple to show the outward look of me. The last drawing on my piece is a marker sketch of my eye. This was one of my most fun pieces to draw. It was hard trying to blend colors with markers and I thought of it as an adventure. I added my eye because not only is it unique how they change colors, but it also represents my eye for art and different pieces of architecture. The sculpture of the piece was made to resemble an "artistic tree." I wanted something that was growing vertically from the floor and had "branches" off of it. It shows that this is who I am, but with growth and experience there is more still to come.

Memory Box

"Design a Container, to house a memory."

This is my first idea, it was to make a container that changes shape and molds into a different object. The fortune teller seemed like a good idea, but needed a little help.

This was my second iteration, I had a hard time making a project that transformed into another without overlapping or making it sloppy looking.

This was my third iteration that looks somewhat unfinished due to the pictures my mom sent in the mail had not gotten here yet. I did have some pictures on the outside, but they were taken out when I scanned them for my final, there also was a ribbon that attached the box together, so you could see inside and open it as well.

These were all of my iterations.

The Objective of this assignment was to, "Design a Container, to house a memory." With this as a prompt, I got right to work. I started brain storming many different significant memories. There was everything from running my first cross country race, playing a violin solo and breaking my arm. While I pondered all these memories, one really stuck out in my mind. The memory of my brother, Timothy being born is one of the most hazzy, but also the first thing I can remember about my life. I remember everything from eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and sitting in the waiting room with my dad and grandmother watching ice skating in the middle of a smoldering July day. I also remember jumping on my mom's stomach right after the cesarean she performed. I decided to represent this memory with a simple box. On the outside, the box is only half covered with pictures, this resembles my life was not full until my brother was born. The outside also shows pictures of only me and my mom or me and my dad. This represents my life before my brother was born, I was an only child and all my parents attention was directed towards me. When you open the box it shows when my brother was born. The box changes into a different shape, representing the significant change in my life and the pictures inside the box contain both my brother and me and our whole family.

Pencil Box Project

Create a place to house pencils. Concentrate on the craft of your project.
I wanted to exemplify my love for the city. I love cityscapes and have always dreamed of living in a large city, with lots of busy people. This project was to remind me of my love of design and the art behind it.
This is my first iteration of my project, it was made out of clumsy cardboard.

This is my second iteration, it was made out of gray mat board, the windows were too large and the glue was on the side, Suzanne also suggested I add a ledge to add depth.

This is my third iteration, the gluing job was really sloppy, so I decided to redo the project a fourth time.

Profile Sketches

This was my third sketch, it was again of Lindsey. I drew her in English class. I feel this one was better than the first drawing, but I still believe my second drawing was the most accurate.

This is the second sketch I made of my roomate Michelle.As you can see the proportions in this drawing are more accurate, but I was a little upset with the nose, because her nose is quite distinctive and you can not tell from this drawing, also her lips were upsetting me. As my high school art teacher used to call them, "sticker lips". Overall I liked this sketch the best.

This is the first sketch I drew. It is of Lindsey in class. On September 13th. I was a little upset with this drawing, but it was a good learning experience, she looks heavier in the face than she does in real life.

Egg Project

These are all photographs of the "Birdhouse" I made for the paper project. The project assignment was to build a place to store an egg, the exemplifies a quality of the egg using only paper. I made my project strictly out of cardboard. When you open up the top of the house you will see a nest that houses the egg. This exemplifies an egg at the most common place it is found. It shows how fragile and nurtured an egg actually is.

These are the examples of my first iterations for the egg project.

This is my second "final" iteration, I changed the design slightly to add strength.

Practicing Scales

In this sketch I drew Kelly's desk in proportion to the rest of the room. I felt completely engaged in the practice and I loved having that time to draw, I also really enjoyed the outcome of this sketch probably due to my experience in drawing this piece.

People Contours

This post was just a start on two different figure's heads. I wanted to practice the proportion a little before I was too committed.

This was my first and second drawing of the day, they were not the best, but as you can see I progressively got a little better each time. Ben is on the right and I drew him first and Krista is on the left I drew her the next day.

This is my favorite drawing for this project. It was taken at the studio. It is Jayson at his computer desk. He stayed very still so it was easy to draw. I really enjoyed this sketch, but yet again his legs seem a little too small compared to the rest of the bodies ratio.

This is one of my Last Drawings. It is of my room mate Michelle on her desk in our room. I was happy with her body proportion, but her hands appear to be a little too small.
